Cinema made a global comeback last year, as crowds flocked to the big screen when the Barbenheimer phenomenon took hold. Malta was no exception - here’s a list of the films that drew the largest audiences in local cinemas last year:

Barbie

The Little Mermaid

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Wonka

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Fast X

Napoleon

Elemental

As can be seen from the list above, the favourite genre among cinema goers in Malta and Gozo is non-animation fiction, with 74% choosing to watch a film within that genre, and animation comes in second with 23%.

Films hailing from the US remain favourites with local audiences, holding a whopping 88% of the admissions in 2023.

The post-pandemic cinema slump seems to be well and truly behind us, as cinema admissions in Malta and Gozo last year increased to 594,087 from 460,244 admissions in 2022.

From those admissions, 4,884 were for local productions, most of which were short films rather than feature-length, while the rest attended foreign productions, the latter garnering a gross box office of €4,488,290!

Which of these films did you watch in 2023?
