Gozitan operas have become staple elements of Malta’s annual theatrical calendar – and with good reason!

In a bid to keep these productions up and running for the foreseeable future, the Ministry for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government and the Ministry for Gozo granted them the impressive sums of €330,000 and €60,000, respectively.

Astra Theatre and Aurora Theatre are the venues set to benefit the most from such investments.

Between 2022 to 2024, the Astra and Aurora Theatre will be getting €65,000 every year.

“Opera has a very strong platform in Gozo, and thanks to the ICO-Gozo we can continue investing in artistic excellence in this form of theatre, which is so well loved and appreciated on the island,” Arts Minister Owen Bonnici said.

“This is an interesting month for Gozo. Through the collaboration with Leone and La Stella societies, we have managed to draw up an intensive but ambitious programme of events to bolster Gozo’s attempt to establish itself as a renowned opera destination,” Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri continued.

This is the first run of the ICO-Gozo, previously known as the Gozo Cultural Support Programme.

Thanks to both initiatives, a total sum of €2,385,000 will have been invested in Gozitan organisation active in the cultural and creative sectors between 2016 and 2024.
