Got a Christmas gift crisis? These markets in Malta will have you sorted
From artisan goodies to festive treats, you’re bound to pick up something unique.

Jo Caruana

We can’t get enough of market stalls and artisan pop-ups at this time of year – they’re everything we love about the festive season, and a cup of mulled wine. So, with just a few shopping days to Chrimbo, we’ve written our list (and checked it twice) to present our pick of the very best Christmas markets taking place in the run up to the big day.

Pop-up Christmas Market, Sliema
8-9; 15-16 December

Hosted by Souvenirs That Don't Suck and Te fit-Tazza, this Christmas Market is guaranteed to spread Christmas cheer. The Pop-up Chrismas Market will take place over two weekends at the dinky Souvenirs That Don't Suck shop in Sliema. The curated selection of stallholders includes a mix of fashion, jewellery, homewares and accessories guaranteed to suit every gift on your list. Pop by and enjoy the festive vibes, have a warm cuppa’ and listen to some feel-good music.

Natalis Notabilis, Rabat
7-13 December

The historic town of Rabat will transform into Malta’s very own Christmas Village once again, as Natalis Notabilis is back in town between 7 and 13 December. This ‘ultimate’ Christmas market will meet all your festive needs as there will be 100 stalls set up throughout the winding streets of Rabat (it’s one of our favourite villages, by the way). These will include artisans selling local products and crafts, and Maltese and international stalls selling traditional delicacies, as well as Natalis Notabilis’ warming mulled wine. With local venues also taking part in the festivities – including the Franciscan Friary, the Notarial Archives Resource Council, and Palazzo Xara – and preparing their own delicacies, you’re in for a true Christmas wonderland experience.

The Elves' Christmas Factory, Dingli
14-16 December

The Elves' Christmas Factory will return for its edition between 14-16 December, after its super successful market last year. Located on Triq Guze Mercer, Dingli, you will find stalls loaded with food, toys and plants, which make wonderful gifts… all prepared by Santa’s little helpers (of course). It’s also a great place to spend time with the family and treat yourself to some of the traditional festive treats that the elves have got to offer, and go on a sleigh ride and get your picture taken with Mr and Mrs Claus. While you’re there, check out the beautiful Christmas tree, which is made entirely out of recycled tires. And last but not least, the Christmas Factory has promised to outdo themselves by creating the nation’s largest Christmas stocking ever.

Enchanted Village, San Ġwann
14-16 December

The first edition of San Ġwann Primary’s Christmas Market will take you straight into the heart of this local town, and transform the school into an enchanted village, full of unique stalls and family fun. Enjoy a glass of mulled wine and festive food, while talented local artists take to the main stage. And if you’ve been nice, you can also get your picture taken with Santa, or listen to animated stories and discover the other fun things going on in the kids' area.

Which one will you be heading to?
