Din l-Art Ħelwa and BirdLife Malta are teaming up to kick off the festive season in a unique way, celebrating the return of Yelkouan Shearwaters to the cliffs of Malta and the launch of a new project, LIFE Tetide.

The event will take place on the 2nd of December and it will start at 3.30 pm at Dwejra Tower, a historic Knights-era tower dating back to 1652, which has been recently restored. A representative from Din l-Art Ħelwa, Malta's National Trust, will provide a brief tour of this fascinating landmark.

Following this, BirdLife Malta will present information on seabirds on Gozo, with a focus on the new LIFE Tetide project, which includes vital initiatives in the Dwejra area. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn how they can contribute to the conservation of shearwaters and petrels that breed on Gozo.

The event will also include a visit to the tower's roof, if weather conditions are favourable, offering breathtaking sunset views, and possibly some Christmas treats. Visitors will then venture out along the cliffs to listen for the calls of Yelkouan Shearwaters.

These birds return to the cliffs at this time of year to claim their burrows and reunite with their mates. The evening offers a unique opportunity to appreciate these birds in their natural habitat, especially after dark.

To ensure a comfortable and safe experience, participants are advised to wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for some rough terrain. The cliff walk covers approximately 1 km on rocky paths.

So, get ready to embrace the festive season and the return of these remarkable birds while exploring the historical and natural wonders of Malta's Dwejra area.
