From X Factor bingeing to kitchen fun! Here's the ultimate lazy autumn weekend in Malta
A weekend indoors doesn't have to be boring

Kristina Cassar Dowling

It’s that awkward time again. The lazy autumn feeling that creeps in somewhere around the end of October and beginning of November. An odd phenomenon is caused by two peculiar factors:

  1. The cool down after summer’s rush; where parties, late nights, beach days and obscene amounts of alcohol came your way.
  2. The warm up before the Christmas thrill; where parties, late nights, Christmas shopping and obscene amounts of alcohol WILL come your way.

There are many reasons a lazy weekend indoors may rid your body of the inconsistencies of summer’s past and the unforeseen (not quite) results of Christmas to come. And here's what you can do on that ultimate lazy weekend:

The TV binge

For this activity, you will need a combination of the following items:

  1. Determination and devotion - if your aim is to finish a complete series of GoT, by God get the job done. Put your back into it.
  2. Sweet and salty - your snacking materials must consist of a combo of both salty (e.g. popcorn) and sweet (e.g. chocolate) treats.
  3. Horizontal and vertical - ahh, the age old tale of balancing out your sit and watch session with the lie and watch option; variety is key.

The bookworm’s marathon

No explanation needed here: find your favourite book (or books, depending on how fast a reader you are) and get to turning those pages. Book yourself a family servant for the day - get your better half to keep the teas, snacks and other necessities coming throughout the weekend. Bonus: get some extra attention by faking sick… shh, don’t blow my cover!

The baking boom

Think of cinnamon, apples, chocolate, possibly even the smell of freshly roasted coffee beans wafting through the house. Yep, you guessed it folks, it’s a stay home and bake kind of weekend. Mix up a selection of your favourite recipes; make smaller portions of each but more variety since you have the time, and create cute little baked baskets for you to devour alone or share with some very special people.

The sit and chill

Sometimes, there’s nothing quite like vegging. Sitting in a comfy spot with a nice cup of tea, a warm blanket, a few other bodies beside you and a plan to do NOTHING. Veg, that’s the plan. We’ll veg till we get bored of vegging and if we don’t we’ll veg some more. A good veg session may seem pointless to the hyperactive few around, but for some people, clearing your brain of any outside noise after a long week at the office can do wonders for your mental health. Just don’t make it a regular thing.

The treat yourself treat

Oooohhh, it’s time to treat yourself to something special. This one’s for you to muster up… think of something you’ve been meaning to do but have always put off, either because of guilt or due to the indecisive character that conditions your fun time. It could be a binge take-away from some not-so-healthy restaurant, a pamper session to reunite with your non-caveman self or a cheeky little massage from the one you love.

Get the most out of your lazy weekend in by planning it out. Work in units like Hugh Grant explains in About a Boy, and give each activity a set amount of units to make your day seem structured - unless you’re cool with lounging for 48hrs of course!
