Santa Marija, celebrated yesterday, on the 15th of August, is a national public holiday and arguably Malta’s most widely celebrated feast.

Normally, the festa is celebrated with much pomp and glory in no less than seven towns and villages across Malta and Gozo, although this year, COVID-19 restrictions have meant that festa enthusiast have had to forgo the traditional food stalls, band marches and processions.

What locals didn’t have to forgo, however, were the stunning fireworks displays, which have come the be synonymous with local village feasts. And yesterday saw displays in no less than seven towns across the islands: Attard, Gudja, Hal Għaxaq, Mosta, Mqabba, Qrendi, and Victoria in Gozo.

And if you somehow missed out on all the action (though we’re sure you’d have heard it from wherever you were on the Maltese Islands) here’s a selection of photos from the spectacles of the night.
