Fancy your sanity? 6 traffic spots to avoid during rush hour on the Maltese Islands
These areas are to be avoided like the plague!

Jillian Mallia

Rush hour on Malta's roads can really test our (very limited) Maltese patience. Whether it’s the morning bumper-to-bumper heading to work, or the evening traffic going back home, if you're on the island and aren't part of the twice daily rate race to and from the office, these five places are best avoided... that is, if you value your sanity!

1. Marsa – Aldo Moro area (any direction)

This is like a curse on the Maltese. Once someone mentions Aldo Moro, a chill is sent down every Maltese commuter’s spine. With the road works currently underway, we simply can’t handle the amounts of traffic in Marsa!

2. Birkirkara bypass

A very common Mulej hudni traffic spot that continues to fuel the fire that is the Maltese temper. Whether it’s a sigh of frustration or a colourful sentence, you’re sure to experience some form of reaction in this traffic spot.

3. Lija Cemetry

Every northling knows the feeling of chock-a-block traffic in this area. People coming from or going to Mellieha, St Paul’s Bay and Mosta know that there’s 100 per cent chance of standstill traffic in this area. So, crank up the tunes and while the time away.

4. Msida (direction north)

A classic ommimaaa and ha nsabbat rasi area. Joining the north and south, Msida is constantly inundated with traffic and there’s no way out but through it. Brace yourselves, cue the sighs and puffs of frustration.

5. Airport (direction north)

One for the southlings – the Airport/Gudja/Hal Kirkop connection is one known to make Maltese blood boil. To be avoided at all costs for fear of extreme road rage!

6. Sliema front

The Sliema promenade from the 'Love' sign in St Julian's all the way to Sliema Ferries tends to be a hub of slow-moving traffic. This is another spot to avoid to keep your sanity during rush hour!
