Exclusive: a Maltese Londoner shoots music video in Malta
Introducing Rhymestar… the MC with Maltese roots.

Kristina Cassar Dowling

The first time I met Rhymestar, we were sitting at a commercial coffee house, sipping at the cold brews that acted as a buffer between the two awkward souls who planned to meet for an interview. We chatted, we laughed, we got along and kept in touch. Rhymestar was shooting a new music video titled Under the Influence, featuring stunning shots of our beautiful island, and now, it's out!

Rhymestar is half Maltese and claims Malta his spiritual home. He remembers the quirky things that make us smile, such as the Maltese pound, the traditional buses with string bells, the pre-air conditioned airport, the pre-tarmacked roads and collecting glass bottles on the beach to exchange them for money at the local bakery. He knows the ins-and-outs of old Malta, and feels a clear magnetization to our little rock - the crystal blue waters summon him from his London base.

Therefore, the pull towards Malta as the location for his next music video is entirely understandable. The emotional connection Rhymestar feels is surpassed by the incredible scenic beauty he values, and the historical impulse follows the concept envisioned for his next single. Some of the top locations on view include Mdina, Golden Bay and Blue Grotto. Packed with some stunning shots of our top destinations, Under the Influence puts Malta on the MC and Hip Hop map - giving Malta a new angle and direction in the music world.

Once all the filming was done, Rhymestar could chill and enjoy his favourite island. By the water, Riviera Martinique and St Peter’s Pool are among his favourites. His must do itinerary in Malta always includes pastizzi from his favourite; Crystal Palace in Rabat paired with an ice-cold Cisk. Once the beach day is had and the pastizzi devoured, there’s always room for some culture; his favourite spots are Mdina and Valletta - two localities that are "littered with characteristics and stories of occupiers and visitors who have left their influences and footprints over the centuries." Rhymestar’s top tip is to hit the village festa if there's one happening on your visit - get in on the action and have a blast. "Whether you are looking to relax and chill, explore and learn, or enjoy the nightlife, Malta has something special for you!"
