Domus Zamittello Hotel in Valletta is a finalist for this prestigious Italian architecture award
The renovated and stunning Domus Zamittello Hotel in Valletta could be up for an award after making the finalist for the renovation category of The Plan Awards (Italian architecture awards).
Domus Zamittello was initially a townhouse which dates back to the 18th century which was then turned into a boutique hotel with 21 rooms and six suites, designed by Edwin Mintoff Architects.
The building is no stranger to awards, having won the Planning Authority award for Conservation Architecture back in 2018 and the Din L-Art Helwa Award for the Rehabilitation and Re-Use of Buildings in 2020.
Works began over 17 years ago and concentrated on respecting the historic elements of the building while also renovating the façade and interior spaces. The modern interventions, however, were accentuated in the process.
From the first floor upwards, the building was vacant for years on end and these floors had fallen in quite the dilapidated state. Some of the ground-floor areas had been rented out previously for commercial reasons but were bought back by the proprietor to be able to do such works.
Interestingly, two basement levels were found during construction, with one filled with material from World War II, while the other was being used as a store.
Good luck!
