Desert skies over Malta! A weekend of sand, force 8 winds and light rain up ahead
Get ready for a taste of the Sahara this weekend, as Malta braces for a spell of desert-like weather from Saturday 22nd March to Monday 24th March. A low-pressure system stretching from North Africa to Italy is expected to bring strong southeasterly winds, airborne fine dust, and even some sandy rain – so you might want to postpone that carwash!
A powerful southeasterly current will sweep across the region, with gusts reaching up to Force 8 at their peak. If you're planning any outdoor activities, be prepared for blustery conditions, especially on Saturday and Sunday.
With winds coming straight from the Sahara, expect hazy skies and plenty of airborne fine dust. Cars, balconies, and streets may soon be coated in a thin layer of sand carried over from the desert.
Light rain is possible on Sunday and Monday, but don’t expect much relief – it’s more likely to be the kind that leaves everything streaked with sand rather than giving us a proper wash.
Thankfully, next week should bring winds of change! By late Monday, the wind will shift to a northwesterly direction, clearing out the desert air and bringing this sandy episode to an end.
Forewarned is forearmed - if you have respiratory issues, it might be best to limit outdoor activities. Also, with gusty winds in store, it’s a good idea to tie down or bring in anything that could be blown away.
Whether you're fascinated by the idea of Sahara dust reaching our shores or just annoyed at the thought of cleaning up after it, this weekend’s weather is sure to be a talking point. Keep an eye on forecasts, and brace yourself for a gritty few days!
