The symbol is awarded to marine areas which are completely free from plastic and other biodegradable waste
The White Flag has officially been flown at Gnejna Bay, after the sea at the bay and the surrounding area was cleaned from any type of plastic and waste. During the past weeks, the White Flag team collected a total of 108.7kg of waste from the seabed and surfaces of the surrounding areas.
Gnejna is among the eight bays across the Maltese Islands that have been awarded this prestigious status. Wied iz-Zurrieq, Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay, together with Gnejna, are the four bays in Malta that have White Flag status so far. In Gozo, the flag was given to Wied il-Ghasri, Marsalforn, Dahhlet Qorrot and Imgarr ix-Xini.
The White Flag is awarded by the Ocean Alliance Conservation Member, who are in the process of certifying Malta as the world’s first plastic-free ocean country. The White Flag represents the world’s most unique and prestigious symbol awarded to marine areas which are completely free from plastic and other biodegradable waste. And we think it's awesome!
