Click clack! Did you take typewriting classes back in the day?
The typewriter hasn’t been around much since computers were invented...

With the evolution of technology came the near-eradication of the typewriter, a machine that was widely used back in the day. The sight of a typewriter nowadays brings back major nostalgia and a thread in the public Facebook group Nostalgia Malta had number of locals reminiscing their days attending classes to learn how to use the machine.

Some locals noted that they learned how to type at school and still have their typewriters stored away somewhere in their houses. “I used to love the noises it used to make,” said one local in the comments section. “If I can to choose between a keyboard and typewriter, I’d choose this!”

Mr Ciliberti in Birkirkara, Tal-Handaq School in the ‘60s, Mr Cauchi in Valletta, Zrinzo in Hamrun, Pace School of Commerce in Valletta, Sammy’s School of Typing in Santa Veneara, Pitmans in Rudolph Street were just a few places mentioned where locals took typewriting lessons. One local noted that the exams used to be held at Fort St Elmo and “I had to carry my heavy typewriter all the way from the bus terminus to the hall.” Quite the feat!

It seems like a lifetime ago!
