More events are being cancelled on a daily basis.
The Valletta local council has cancelled two events that were meant to take place this weekend in light of the current situation Malta is facing with the surge of COVID-19 cases.
The two events being called off include a 5km race that includes a route through the capital, as well as an official visit by President George Vella. The race is still taking place but will include an alternative route, according to councillor Christian Micallef. “We felt that at this time we need to take a step back from organising events of this sort.”
Valletta’s mayor Alfred Zammit announced in a Facebook post that the cancellation of the official visit was a joint decision between the local council and the president. “The health and safety of Maltese citizens and the Beltin come first and foremost,” he said, appealing to all organisations to be responsible during this sensitive time.
Earlier this week, it was also announced that the King’s Own march will not be taking place. Other band clubs have also followed suit in this regard, saying that the health and safety of the feast-goers comes first.
Mass events have been a hot topic as of late, with organisers coming to the decision to cancel certain big gatherings including Glitch Club Series, G7 and District. Doctors have also called for the withdrawal of permits for mass events of over 10 people until 3rd August, issuing a declaration of industrial dispute, saying only emergency duties will be performed should this not be met.
