Beach picnic? Wine by the sea? Hit these 5 must-visit Malta beaches in the colder season
Just pack a sweater and enjoy the sun!

Kristina Cassar Dowling

Living in Malta means that we get to enjoy 300 days of sunshine a year (yes, you read right)! Gloomy winter months are few and far between, and even if we do get bouts of rain and some storms, these are often followed by glorious days of sun!

This obviously means that beach days are entirely possible and plausible! Here are the top 5 beaches to visit during the winter’s chill.

Golden Bay

This beach is a perennial favourite, perfect for families who enjoy a spot of sandcastle building or for those brave enough to try some more sporty activities such as bodyboarding. The waves here are excellent so grab your wetsuit, get into the water and glide above the waves at Golden Bay. There’s also a kiosk at the top of the bay where you can warm up with a hot chocolate after your seaside adventure.

Paradise Bay

The flight of stairs to the bottom of Malta’s gorgeous Paradise Bay are well worth the effort, especially when you find yourself a patch of sun just by the shore. Don’t be fooled by the heat though, you will need to snuggle up if your plan is to sit and read until the sun goes down, so pack yourself a vacuum flask with freshly brewed coffee (and pop a few biscuits in your bag, while you’re at it).

Ghadira Bay

Ghadira Bay never disappoints. Rain or shine, you’re in for a treat. If you’re lucky, you will catch a glimpse of the young kids on their sailing boats, enjoying a lesson in the winter sun or, better yet, if the wind’s strong, windsurfers will be out rocking the waves giving you a show which you can savour from land.

Pretty Bay

Walking along the Birzebbuga promenade is always pleasant and heading onto the sandy beach for a run around with the kids is even better. Pretty Bay is a great spot to spare a few hours away from your busy schedule, and maybe even grab an ice-cream on the way home.

Ramla Bay

Gozo’s gem, Ramla Bay is where the red hues sparkle in the sunshine as beams of light hit the granules of sand below. A picnic perfect location where long stretches of sand and gorgeous waves meet just in time for a frisbee session with your mates. Sit by the monument for a little shelter from the wind, if the breeze picks up.

Whoever said beach days were for the summer months alone? It all depends on how you look at things in life, after all!
