Be productive this Boxing Day: 5 great things to do tomorrow
No money or gorging required.

Joanna Demarco

After the high that was Christmas Day, the 26th of December often feels like an anti-climax. What, no more presents? No more slouching in front of the telly, belly expanding with each bite of panettone? If today feels a bit like a time-space vaccuum in which nothing occurs (except for the sales...but, hey, you've spent all your money already!), then take a look at our suggestions for productive things you can do while your family members scoop out those leftovers from the fridge.

1. Sort out unwanted presents...and give some away!

Realistically, we all wake up on Boxing Day to an avalanche of gifts and wrapping from the day before. How about you sort through those presents and place aside the ones you do not want or need? Yes, like that 112th pair of socks that you probably could do without. There are a lot of people who will benefit more from them and there are local causes and charities which mediate between giver and receiver. Embody the true spirit of Christmas, this year. You might find out you enjoy handing out more than you loved taking in.

2. Think back on the year and set out your New Year’s resolutions

Now that Christmas is over and the year is drawing to an end, Boxing Day could be an ideal day to have some alone time to think back on 2018 and set out some New Year’s resolutions for 2019. But, stay away from the norm and resist buying that gym membership (you know you're never going to use it) or that bag load of quinoa (seriously?) and stay focused on the changes you really need to set in stone.

3. Recover from that food coma by going on a hike

We're usually blessed with the perfect hiking weather at Christmas time, so heading to the great outdoors on Boxing Day is a breezy way of moving those stiff joints. After your self-inflicted Christmas food coma, that never-ending interaction with family and friends and the the thick smell of candied fruit and cinnamon, we could all benefit from some fresh air, physical movement and personal space. Here are a few suggestions for routes you could follow. And if your canine best bud also needs some stretching, Noah’s Ark Sanctuary in Mellieha opens their doors to dog-owners and their pets for a walk around, which can really brighten up your Boxing Day, and that of your furry friend.

4. Watch a few good feature films and documentaries

Don’t feel like budging? Boxing Day could also be seen as slump day, but you could also be productive in your PJs by watching some standout storytelling and educational features. This could be the day you recharge your batteries, away from the ball and chain of everyday routine. Now, where was that remote...

5. Organise a leftover-food-gathering

Since generally no one is working on Boxing Day, and there is usually an endless supply of leftovers to get through, why not join forces with your friends or family and have a food gathering? It is like a stress-free version of Christmas, where your bed clothes are accepted and waste is minimised. What, more food, we hear you say? Well, the diet start in the New Year, right?
