This is a huge increase from last years figures.
Malta’s National Statistics Office (NSO) has just released some very interesting numbers about Maltese tourism habits these past couple of months…
Turns out that tourism is well on its way to reaching pre-pandemic numbers now that most COVID-19 measures have been lifted, with a whopping 88,196 outbound trips being made from Malta between January and March 2022.
Only 18,717 outbound trips were recorded in the same period last year!
Having said that, numbers are still considerably smaller than in pre-COVID-19 years, with 115,000 outbound trips being registered in Malta in the first three months of 2020.
Between January and March 2022, 42,035 people travelled for holiday purposes with another 28,498 travelling to visit friends and relatives. 10,705 people went abroad for reasons related to business whilst the remaining 6,958 visited for health or educational reasons.
56.4 per cent of outbound tourists were aged between 24 and 44, whilst 24.9 per cent were aged between 45 and 64.
Italy was, by far, the most popular destination with 32,369 travellers visiting the country. The UK was the second most popular destination, visited by 10,248 travellers leaving from Malta.
In total, Maltese tourists spent over €69 million euros abroad, averaging at €782 per person
