A breath of fresh air! Plan launched to introduce more green spaces in urban areas
A new initiative is being launched in the coming weeks to create more green spaces in urban areas.
This was confirmed earlier today by the Environment Minister Aaron Farrugia through a video message shared on social media. In the video, he explained that: "The concept is related to urban greening, which means the beautification and care of industrial zones across Malta and Gozo." He continued that a number of local councils will be benefitting from this investment with a number of trees and shrubs set to be planted in the near future.
Five localities will benefit from the first phase of this project: Qala, Sliema, Hamrun, Gudja and Zebbug.
Hamrun mayor Christian Sammut confirmed a roof garden will be built on the Lyceum's rooftop, as well as a reservoir. The project will also include two open classrooms which can be used by the students at the lyceum to carry out morning classes in as well as residents in the evening to carry out sports sessions.
Sliema mayor Paul Rudmili explained that the the town's promenade areas are set to benefit greatly: "We've selected three different trees that bloom at different times of the year," he says. The mayor confirmed the project would be finalised in 2020.
Minister Farrugia continued that this plan was not just for aesthetic purposes but to ensure a better quality of living for residents. “This is just the beginning. We are looking towards a green revolution in the country,” the Minister concluded.
