9 classic Malta photos from summer 2018 we're already missing
A wistful look at summer days gone by now that winter is here...

Melanie Drury

Keen Instagrammers will know what I mean when I say we’re already missing some stereotypical images from our news feeds. As a writer, I regularly scan Malta photos on Instagram looking for interesting images to go with my articles. Come the end of summer, some by-now-familiar photos have become inconspicuously missing. Here’s what I mean.

1. The ‘Check my bum out!’ pic

The days when discretion and modesty were the order of the day are long gone. These are days when an opportunity to flaunt the diva within is permitted.

2. The ‘moment of glory’ exhibition

That goes for the machos too. Some naturally and some none too discreetly, many a man loves to show off his Greek god elegance against a paradise-like backdrop too.

3. The amusing pineapple at the Blue Lagoon

Perhaps the most common photograph of 2018 goes to the pineapple at the Blue Lagoon. I wonder if each of those people thought they were being original or perhaps it was a fad like ‘planking’ that we just don’t know about.

4. The ‘Look where I am!’ legs photo, with a bonus chilled Cisk

A good dose of tease for friends back home comes in the form of feet embedded in warm sand, dipping in crystal clear sea or simply relaxing, pointing towards some extraordinary view. Not like your shoes and concrete... yes, I hate the fact that I will go back to that quite soon. But right now, this is the moment I always want to remember. And I will always want a Cisk.

5. The Aperol Spritz ‘high life’ emblem

A sure way to get your friends truly envious of your holiday is to Instagram that drink that is synonymous with a Mediterranean summer: the Aperol Spritz. Its also quite photogenic - its bright orange colour contrasts well with the blue sea and sky; it might even symbolise the colour of the high life. It’s definitely better than coffee at the office.

6. The ‘cool in sunglasses’ photo

It’s hot, it’s sunny… and I’m cool. Reminiscent of Tom Cruise shots and David Hasselhoff ‘Baywatch’ moments, these poised (posed?) shots are model worthy. Yeah, check me out.

7. The ‘enviable ice cream’ pic

It’s either to show off our huge multi-flavoured ice cream waffle with flake and biscuit to Instagram mates or truly to remember the divine experience of eating such pure deliciousness. Cool, refreshing, creamy, tasty, lovely, slurpy, crunchy, on and on … a truly memorable taste of summer.

8. Fireworks!

So many fireworks photos … naturally. Because there are so many occasions for fireworks during a Maltese summer; all the festa celebrations and any occasion, in fact. Visitors have several opportunities to become fascinated by them and snap away.

9. Qawra shipwreck

Only this one scene is gone forever, because all the others will return next season. This ship hugged the coast of Qawra on 10th February 2018 and spent a charming spring and summer on that shore. It has now been removed and looks forward to becoming a dive wreck.

Are there any iconic Malta summer 2018 photos we have left out?
