Melanie Drury

Are you wondering where to go or what to do this Valentine’s Day to win the favours of the one you love? Well, Malta is a already a romantic destination - it is beautiful, charming and oozes character - so you’ve already got a heads up! Now, where to go to make the most of it? Here are my pick of the most delightful romantic spots in Malta and Gozo for some quiet time to celebrate your love and each other.

1. Ghajn Tuffieha at Sunset

Sunset Ghajn Tuffieha Malta

Riviera Beach is a magical location for a romantic sunset with a bottle of wine on Valentine’s Day. This is a great spot to cuddle up with your date - just lay a blanket on the soft sand and enjoy the natural spectacle. Golden sands, aquamarine sea, green slopes dotted with the colours of early wildflowers and a historic watchtower make a delightful sight. Oh, and the clouds will take on ever-changing hues after the sun has set. Take your camera!

2. Mdina Bastions

Mdina

All of Mdina, from start to finish, will make you feel like you have just been dropped into a Medieval fairytale. There is something beautiful to admire wherever you lay your eyes along its narrow streets, massive historic homes and majestic bastion walls. Whisk your beloved to the Bastions Square to see the entire island and feel on top of the world together. And when you're done, celebrate with delicious chocolate cake from Fontanella, the nearby cafe.

3. Sa Maison Garden, Floriana

Sa Maison Garden

This garden is lovely, yet, the most marvellous thing about it is that it remains a secret of sorts, and it is quite likely that you may have it all to yourselves! Located on Floriana Bastions (the entrance is down the hill from the Police Headquarters), it offers stunning views of Marsamxett Harbour, Msida Marina and the fort at Manoel Island. Some of its secrets include historic carved graffiti - who will find them first?

4. Wied iz-Zurrieq

Wied iz-Zurrieq boats

This spot is simply charming. Colourful little boats take visitors to see the wonderful Blue Grotto on good weather days, when you will also find people sat at cafes soaking in the sunshine. You can also enjoy good food at one of the restaurants, walk along the amazing coast, contemplate the mysterious Filfla island and watch the sunset.

5. Mellieha Sanctuary Square

Mellieha Sanctuary

This is a picture perfect viewpoint for memorable photos of the two of you that include Maltese culture and Malta’s natural beauty. Set in dreamy surroundings, this quaint square, which is rarely busy, grants gorgeous views of Gozo and Comino islands. Book a romantic hotel night in Mellieha and fully enjoy the village cafes, restaurants, places of interest, countryside, caves and beaches.

6. Gardjola Gardens, Senglea

Gardjola Garden

Lead your love across historic gardens to the Gardjola (guard tower) and go in for a kiss or even pop the big question right there as you admire the magnificent Grand Harbour without any of the crowds. The Gardjola is decorated with symbols that represent the protection of the Maltese shores - a perfect spot to declare that you want to protect each other forever.

7. Dingli Chapel at Sunset

St. Mary Magdalene Chapel - Dingli

There are few things in Malta as breathtaking as standing at the edge of Dingli Cliffs looking out across the big blue, stretching undisturbed for miles into the horizon. Place a little chapel at the edge of this cliff and the scene is complete for a wedding proposal.

8. Gozo

Sunset

Pretty much everything about Gozo oozes charm, and is ideal for a romantic date. Whether you choose to visit a secluded beach such as Wied il-Ghasri or Mgarr ix-Xini, hold hands at the awe-inspiring window at Wied il-Mielah at sunset, get lost together in the historic Citadel or have a romantic dinner at Xlendi, you will find yourselves captivated by the sheer beauty and calm of Gozo.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
