Enjoying the beach is not only a summer time pastime. Here are some winter ways to enjoy the seaside past swimming season.

Enjoy the soulful beauty of nature away from the fast-paced activity of the towns and cities. And what nature is most delightful in Malta if not the seaside? When the cooler weather kicks in, there's no reason to forego the beach altogether. Just because the temperatures are not ideal for swimming, it does not mean that there is nothing to enjoy at the seaside! Dress well, and take an extra layer to account for the cooler sea breeze, and hit the coast. Here are some ideas on how to enjoy the seaside at this time of year.

Take a walk along the coast

You may feel adventurous and opt for a full-fledged coastal trek across boulders and cliff edges. Or you may prefer a stroll along a well-paved promenade, of which there are many around the Maltese Islands. In any case, the vast open space between sea and sky, the gorgeous seascapes and the fresh salty air are therapeutic, guaranteed.

Playtime on the beach

The beach is for kids of any age. Who doesn't enjoy kicking a bit of sand about? There's a reason they put sand on children's playgrounds: you can jump and fall without any concern for injury. Whether you choose to have a game of frisbee, football, fly a kite, juggle or build a sandcastle, release that inner child and allow it to play freely. You'll be glad you did.

Go fishing

Total stillness becomes your mind when you wait quietly with the sharp attention of a cat watching a mouse hole. Or a person watching a fishing line. Fishing is a peaceful time in quiet meditation or contemplation for those who love this pastime; might you try it if this is totally unfamiliar to you? Plus, if you're lucky, you get a free dinner!

Have a beach picnic or BBQ

Dress suitably, pack a blanket and your favourite selection of picnic food, and settle anywhere by the sea. You can even cook on a portable BBQ. Just fill your belly, in good company, with the gentle sun on your skin and the sound of crashing waves in the air; you'll nourish your whole being and you'll be smiling.

Indulge in relaxation

Actually, the seaside is great for any kind of relaxing activity... or non-activity. Meditate, nap in the sunshine, listen to the waves as you stare at the sky and sink into the sand; this is the perfect place to allow yourself to just be. There is nothing to do. There is nowhere to go. Simply feel yourself, here, now. With gratitude for being. Simply 'being' versus 'thinking' or 'doing' is a rare luxury for most; a doorway to our innate essence that we can experience with every breath.

You see, the seaside is a great setting for anything that uplifts your soul... after all, it is a place where all the elements come together: earth, water, fire (the sun), air and ether.
