Change is good. Wanting to improve your life is good. But failing to keep your unachievable New Year’s Resolutions is sad - it happens every year and still, you make them! But maybe it’s not your willpower that’s out of whack... perhaps it’s the intensity of your goals.

We all want to get super fit, have clearer skin and flawless hair while sporting the hottest Instagram page - that’s modern society’s idea of perfection. Filtering through all the (pardon my French) bullshit, and finding the real meaning and purpose in your life is not about sticking to a list of goals you set a few weeks before the ball drops however. It’s about changing your perspective, and these five tips are a great start. 

1. Change your lifestyle - not your diet

The way we eat is so important - it gives us so much joy to eat a tasty meal, and riding ourselves of the finer things in life is a sad, sad way to go through each day. Dieting is the source of all evil and should be shunned by society... promoting a healthy lifestyle, on the other hand, is what 21st century living should be about. If you want that glass of wine with dinner, work for it before and #treatyoself.

2. Become more Earth conscious

Our planet has been calling out for help for years now! Mother Nature has been so patient, but just like our mamma’s fuse, this one’s about to pop and it won’t be pretty. The new laws on recycling and collection of organic waste might be a good place to start, but taking it one step further by refusing packaging and choosing alternative products could help restore those anger levels and give planet Earth a chance at survival.

3. Read more and think more

Collecting your thoughts is so important in this hectic lifestyle we’re leading. No longer is island life a whimsical carefree way to live - we need to prepare for the troubles ahead just as much as the biggest city dwellers do nowadays! Give yourself time to think, read and reflect on some good self-help books to channel your thoughts in the right direction.

4. Remember the good things in life

Smile more - this should be your number one. Studies show that people who smile more are more resistant to pain and tolerate troubling thoughts a whole lot better. So when you’re having a bad day, don’t think about the crummy things in life, think about the red sand of Ramla Bay or the taste of a freshly baked ftira - that should do the trick.

5. Allow yourself to fail

Sometimes we screw up and that’s OK. Learning to deal with our mistakes is what helps us grow as people; being hard on yourself will only put you down and stop you from trying again - clear your head with a long walk to your favourite scenic spot, like Migra l-Ferha or Sannap Cliffs, and think of how you can make things right or move along all together - you will kill it next time!
