A first in Europe! Malta gets sophisticated Corona-testing equipment

Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne today announced that Malta is the first country in Europe to invest in specialised technology to help combat COVID-19.

Minister Fearne explained that Mater Dei’s new equipment is extremely sophisticated and works by robotics. It complements the health authorities’ stance in combating COVID-19: “The more tests we do at this stage, to uncover infected patients and not only cure them but also isolate them and prevent further spread of the Coronavirus in our country, the more we can control the wave of infections that can hit us,” the Health Minister said.

This equipment facilitates the testing process: “It means we can carry out more tests in a shorter time span and issue results on the same day,” Minister Fearne revealed, adding that the machine can finalise up to 800 tests daily.

Minister Fearne also made a special announcement: “Rosch, its manufacturers, are using it the first time in Europe in Malta,” he said, adding that Malta is also one of the first countries worldwide to benefit from such a technology.
