Strong wind warning! Force 8 gusts and rough seas expected to batter Malta

Malta is set for a particularly windy start to November, with a strong wind warning issued for the Maltese Islands as Force 7 winds, isolated showers and rough seas are expected throughout Monday.

According to the Malta Meteorological Office, west-northwesterly winds will blow at Force 5 to 6 during the day before strengthening to Force 6 to 7 overnight. Gusts could potentially reach Force 8 in exposed areas.

The warning, which came into effect on Monday morning, 2nd November, is expected to remain in place until Tuesday morning, 3rd November.

Force 7 winds are classified as near-gale conditions, reaching speeds of approximately 50 to 61km/h, while Force 8 gusts can bring even stronger conditions.

The blustery weather is also expected to affect sea conditions, particularly along Malta’s western and northwestern coastlines, where waves could reach approximately 3.5 metres or higher. The public is being advised to avoid activities close to the sea in exposed areas.

Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 19°C on Monday, dropping to around 15°C overnight, with isolated showers accompanying the strong winds.

The unsettled conditions will continue into Tuesday, with winds reaching Force 5 to 6 before gradually easing during the afternoon.

Wednesday should bring some welcome relief, with partly cloudy skies, lighter winds and temperatures climbing to 22°C.

However, the improvement is expected to be short-lived, as rain is forecast to return on Thursday and Friday, followed by isolated showers over the weekend.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions during the windy conditions, particularly when driving, walking along exposed coastal areas or securing outdoor furniture and loose objects.

It seems summer has officially taken a back seat, at least for the start of November.
