Mellieha local councillor reissues call for rangers following recent illegal shootings

Ivan Castillo, minority leader for the Mellieha local council is reissuing a call for rangers following recent events involving the shooting of animals, specifically flamingos.

“We all read these headlines and ask why? One can only condemn such an act... I am positive ALL do. It is a pity like in all situations the few bad apples shed a dark light on all the others.
No one enjoys these situations (except the few that create them) and I believe there are two ways they can be prevented,” Ivan Castillo starts off in his lengthy post.

Coming together

“All NGOs as well as associations and groups come together and change public opinion. It is a very strong weapon,” he says, noting when people unite for the greater good, all will benefit – in this case, the environment as well as hunters who are practicing their sport diligently. “I am sure the outcome would be positive and we may actually stop situations were NGO’s with good intentions are sidelined. This in my opinion should never be accepted. These few create a perception that all are the same... believe me they are NOT! We may not agree on everything but we ALL should agree on what is unacceptable,” he urges.

Enforcement

“I have spoken with many NGOs - all are in favour of it and we can make a difference if enforcement is present,” he says, urging political bodies to listen to those relevant. “We need rangers NOW not later the allocation of funds is a lame excuse! We have seen millions basically thrown away!!! I am sure we can find enough to safeguard what we ALL LOVE.”

“I have the utmost respect and admiration for all who dedicate their time to what they love. I believe in many cases more should be done by politicians to ensure that all are treated fairly and given the equal opportunity to enjoy what they do without causing damage or harm in a safe and controlled manner. I intend to see that this is done and offer my help to all who need it. But to ensure this we all need self discipline and will to do what is right,” he concludes.
